The evidence that vitamin D can be used to treat acne vulgaris is based on seasonal variations in acne severity and that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D induces cathelicidin and defensins.

Based on findings for other diseases, raising serum 25(OH)D levels to 40 ng/ml may reduce the severity of acne.
